Yelp Reports Major Growth in Searches For Diverse Businesses

Yelp’s latest Local Economic Impact Report shows that searches for diverse businesses have increased significantly over the past year.

The report defined a diverse business as a women-owned, black-owned, Asian-owned or LatinX-owned establishment.

Businesses that identify as women-owned, black-owned, Asian-owned, or LatinX-owned can display features on their Yelp page to help people searching for diverse businesses Huh.

Business owners can opt for more than one specialty, if applicable, such as Black-owned and women-owned.

Yelp tracks data when business owners choose those features on their business page. Its latest report aims to measure the impact of the epidemic on consumer interest in various businesses.

Yelp search data shows growing consumer interest in diverse businesses

In the last one year, including February 2020 to February 2021, the search for diverse businesses has increased. 2,930%.

More specifically:

  • The rate of searches on Yelp has increased for women-owned businesses in the US 264%
  • Yelp searches increased for black-owned businesses in the US 3,085%
  • The rate of searches on Yelp has increased for LatinX-owned businesses in the US 4,077%
  • Yelp searches increased for Asian-owned businesses in the US 130%

The Yelp report describes which types of businesses have seen a significant increase in consumer interest:

  • Women owned: Restaurant search increased 8,620%
  • Latin-Owned: Searches for Nail Salon 1,589%, Searches for hair salons 5,762%
  • Black owned: Searches flower shops 5,740%, Search for vegetarian restaurants 2,142%
  • Asian owned: Search for bakery 721%, Searches for coffee shops 652%

Yelp reports major increase in searches for diverse businesses

In addition to customers seeking different businesses, engagement with diverse businesses also increased.

Yelp’s report defines engagement as viewing a business page, posting a review, or posting a picture.

The engagement quickly increased for some business categories, as they added an identity feature to their Yelp page.

New feature for Asian-owned businesses

With this report, Yelp introduced a new way for businesses to self-identify as Asian-owned if they choose to do so with a free trade specialty.

Business owners can manually add a new feature to their Yelp page at their discretion. Once added, it becomes discoverable to other users.

Follow the steps below to add the Asian-owned feature, or other features mentioned in this post, to the Yelp page:

  • Log in to Yelp for Business
  • In the Features section, click Add or Edit.
  • Select yes next to the applicable attributes
  • Click save changes
