It’s been a heckuva year, hasn’t it? Global pandemics, mass lockouts, political conflicts, civil unrest, protests, conflicts and I am just listing the things I can remember. But in the midst of all this, in 2020 there was a saving grace: video games. Stuck at home, more people turned to gaming than ever before. We had two console launches, both of which were very good. This year we had some disappointment – the beginning of Cyberpunk 2077 Probably the biggest letdown of the year – but for the most part we had some great games and we had a lot to enjoy.
Usually, I make a top 10 list of games, separated by genre (you can read the ones I wrote for 2018 And 2019). But the way it has been done this year is feeling arbitrary and limiting the praise to just one game per genre. Frankly, the games did so much to make the 2020 Biberle that I don’t want them to compete against each other for any kind of top slot.
Instead, I am going to list the games of this year that were the most enjoyable to distract us from this gloomy, challenging journey around the sun. So let’s celebrate, in no particular order, the best games of 2020!
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Was there a game that was more than one tonic by 2020? Beautiful, low-stakes, child-friendly, and addictive, new Horizons We needed the game in 2020. Thanks to a release date that coincided with the severe onset of the epidemic and subsequent lockdown, most of us were happy to escape our small island parade.
new Horizons As a platform for public events, including the 2020 US presidential election, it has become a self-conscious part of the Zagatist. It was strange, because this drunken life simulator has been a niche product for devoted Nintendo fans, perhaps in a less eventful year. Instead it was discovered by hundreds, if not thousands of new fans, and it is still supported today.
The last of us part ii
Unlike the above, a game about an infectious disease that is destroying the world and destroying lives must have been unknowingly tampering with bad taste. It’s lucky then The last of us part ii Such a good game that we can basically ignore. While the gameplay may not be a huge development already, Part IIThe story had the most interesting additions.
While this may be somewhat controversial, Naughty Dog Audacious story decisions And the new characters shook up the status quo in the game and introduced a complex central mechanic. This allowed Ellie to take a worthy step in the center stage and grow as an individual. It is a rewarding sequel that does not trade on the love of the original, and is a good horror game as well.
Coming out the same day Animal Crossing: New Horizons, You can’t ask for more different games than the 2016 sequel Apocalypse. Doom eternal Might be one of the only genuine representatives of the action genre to come out this year, but is damned (literally) if not an excellent one.
No games have been done this year like crime-free is terrible and fun Doom eternal. Between the explosive pace of the gameplay, and the humor of the cuteness, the game forbids you to stop for breath. And I enjoyed every moment of it.
Okay, full disclosure: This is my personal pick for Game of the Year, if you force me to take just one. Because this game made me impossible to drag on for dozens and dozens of hours, and I hatred roguelikes. But even I, who could not be less interested in the central mechanic of this game, found myself absorbed and addicted Hadis.
The game is a series of great things that combine something better than the sum of its parts: great music, great character design, great use of classical myth, great blending of story and gameplay, and Really great voice acting. It is a great game and I will probably play well in 2021 for the most time.
A game I’ve been watching since the announcement of the death, Tsushima’s ghost is Historical ninja-simulator We’re kind of hoping Assassins Creed The series will be one day. But i’m not sure how AC It can top because Ghost Such a great slow-burning story tells that I do not think it can top the same time period.
On top of that, the game is just great to play. The combat is effortless, stealth challenging without punishment, and the map is not large enough to give you the fatigue of the open world. This is a game that tells its story in a certain way and knows what it wants to achieve, which I respect and enjoy. In addition, the multiplayer turns out to be excellent.
The addition of the above about the colorful, cheerful game is really resonating this year, Fall Guys: Final Knockout This year was a multiplayer sensation for those reasons. In a year in which many of us were separated from our friends and family, I can think of no better way to bring everyone together than in a silly party game like this.
Fallen people It is the perfect combination of cute and chaos that makes it perfect for a huge audience for everyone from single player to twitch dreamers. It is also child friendly, something that I don’t think it can be underestimated how many more children were trapped inside this year.
Orient and the Will of the Whips
My pick for one of the first games of the year, and probably the prettiest, Orient and the Will of the Whips There was an amazing follow-up to an already great game. It expands and refines platforming fun, and tells a poignant tale of love, sacrifice and valor with very few words.
I would like to say that this game is actually better than the original, because it is Adds one thing It was originally lacking: an artist with four or more characters. Here Orie interacts with several creatures in his new home, performing real sidequests and collecting missions at the top of the main story. This is a major extension of the original winning formula.
If you told me last year that a free-to-play, available mobile, anime-style Gacha MMORPG would be one of the biggest hits of this year, I would… well, I doubt you, of course, but I don’t think this description will be enough to help me draw Genshin impact.
Of this game Wild breath Style and clever monetization are both major factors that make it so absorbing. The world is so beautiful, and the characters are so earnest and likable that it invests as much as (or secretly suggests) the time and money you ask for.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
There is something relaxing about diving back into the world Assassins Creed – These games are always some combination of fun and educational, such as a particularly fast episode Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego. This time, we slide into the shoes of Ivor the Viking and experience the life of this seafaring raid.
Valhalla The best parts of Odyssey are followed by world exploration and investment in side characters. However I am not a big fan of how it dominates the preceptor backstory (something I consider to be the weakest part AC the story is A great pleasure Ubisoft has spent a decade flashing one to return to the gameplay.
These games were not enough to justify the list, but I felt they deserved acknowledgment.
Madden 2021 and UFC 4This year I did not play many (or any) games, so I bow to the superior wisdom of my colleague Tristan, who said this: “2020 must have been tough for most gamers, but there was a silver lining form for EA. Return to to annoy And UFC Chain. Maiden 2021 Fixing the passing game solved the biggest problem with last year’s title (imho). Both the excellent “Face of the Franchise” and “The Yard” modes are polished and ready to engage people beyond H2H and card-based modes. And UFC 4 Revolutionized its own control system, overthrew the career system and introduced a mellow old-school use-based experience system for individual moves, creating an expert character with a bag of super-driven moves Which is easy to develop your own play style.
Astro’s room: Essentially a performance for PS5 dualdisk controller capabilities, Of astro There is a surprisingly little romantic and a love letter to the history of Sony’s console line. It may not have a compelling story or art design, but it was far from the best puzzle game of the year.
among us: Technically, I can’t class it as a great 2020 game because it didn’t come out in 2020, but I would be remiss if I was excluded among us, A little indie mystery social game that became an event thanks to Twitch streamers and YouTubers, has masked it. It is always good to see a Dalit victory, and among us This year had the biggest cultural impact of any sport so far.
This is my last piece of writing for TNW as a gaming geek, and it’s great to go out on such a high note. We all should enjoy time gaming in 2021!
