Google Maps Lets Users Add Photos Without Leaving a Review

Google Maps is introducing three new ways for users to add supporting content for others, including the ability to share photos without leaving a review.

The announcement of Google Maps features today aims to make sharing and local recommendations easier, and a new community challenge can add some fun to the process.

Google maps photo update

A new content type will soon be rolled out on Google Maps, which will be called Photo Update.

Photo updates allow users to share experiences and highlights with recent photos, no need to leave without review.

A photo update has a recent photo of a place with a small text description.

To add photo updates, start by selecting a location in Google Maps and going to the “Updates” tab. Then tap on the “Add a photo update” button.

Choose photos from there and add a brief description. Users can upload as many photos as they want in a single photo update. Other people’s photo updates can be seen in the same update tab.

When this feature will roll-out in the coming weeks, this will be the first time that users will write photos of a place without any reviews.

This makes the process of photo sharing on Google Maps more casual, allowing one to share photos on social media.

Photo updates can potentially be a flow of user uploads to locations and businesses. Those photos can help others when deciding where to go next.

Build roads on Google Maps

Google Maps users can soon report on road changes by dragging new or missing roads with desktop editing tools.

When a road is missing in the desktop version of Maps, click the side menu button and choose “Edit Map”.

From there, choose “Missing Road” and start editing by drawing lines. The road editing tool will also allow users to rename roads, change the direction of the road, and change or remove the wrong roads.

Watch a short demonstration of the road editor in this video provided by Google:

Users in the street editor can let Google know if a road is closed with details such as dates, reasons, and directions. All users coming down a road will be edited when published by Google.

The feature is running in all 80 countries in the coming months which already allow users to report road updates.

Google Maps Community Challenge

Google is piloting a new community challenge feature, which aims to encourage Maps users nationwide to contribute more reviews, photos and updates.

The community challenge is on Android in the US until next month. Users can participate in the challenge by going to the Contribution tab and select the “Join Local Love Challenge” option.
