VW’s Electric rebirth in America to start
After years of anticipation, I finally got to see and touch a Volkswagen ID.4 crossover Back in mid september. I tested it from every angle, sat on the seats and handled the controls. But it wasn’t until yesterday that I actually met Volkswagen for the US market behind the wheel of this gamechanger.
VW gave me 45 minutes on a route myself that lets me measure the behavior of white crossovers on city streets, freeways, and empty, narrow country roads. The good news is, the prototype model acquitted itself only, thanks!
Like my September trip, this test was prepared with careful cleaning, masking and distancing. I took a virus-free test ride by myself, after enjoying a masked chat in the parking lot with friendly VW press people on a glorious autumn Northern California day.
Ride high
At ID.4 you feel like you’re sitting up – as the American buyer demands – but with a lower center of gravity, thanks to the battery pack under the floor. When you turn on the fat steering wheel, the ID.4 reacts. It is as fun and easy as a golf in a corner. When you press the accelerator, the loud motor happily drives the car forward.
As an EV, ID.4 lets you select either Drive for Regen or D for B with one click on the dash-mounted switch, so you can choose one-paddle driving whenever you want. I found Reagan right on the back roads but unloaded it on the freeway so that I could move my foot away from the right pedal.
In the countryside, the silent drivetrain delivers the excitement you get with the EVs – the whispering calm at such a speed of flight and the feeling of awe. ID.4 has lots of glass – including a giant sunroof – so you can see outside, but you don’t have to hear it. Car your “Hey, pedestrians!” Noise when supporting and when it is slowly increasing (for parking lots), but you will not hear it while driving.
The interior is angular, but not overdue, and the small info pod on the steering wheel serves as a source of instant information without being excessive. The center dash panel provides for selecting a set of rectangles. There, you can:
- Set up and use your phone
- Select radio and other media
- Configure and use a clear navigation system
- Configure vehicle settings
- Connect to apps (including Android Auto and Apple Carplay)
- Fine tune audio sound
- Customize the selection of colorful ambient lighting
- Request help
A long-term test would really give me an opportunity to work on these options, but I can say that the audio works fine and navigation came in handy when I found myself in a different location than my printed route .
Comfortable chairs
The seats for the ride were comfortable and I can imagine traveling longer in this new car. Together 250 mile official limit, You can make San Francisco into a charging stop to travel to Los Angeles.
ID.4 introduces a new design language for the US. Europeans enjoyed ID.3 hatchback For the time being, but VW decided that this would be our first taste of VW’s new line of EVs. While VWs have always put a form to the function, the design has a friendly, larger face and taut detail with softer, more sensitive surfaces.
You can place a Now allow And expect a car in early 2021. For now, your ID.4 will be made overseas, but for a very long time, the Chatanogo, Tennessee, plant will start making ID.4s. This should increase availability and the introduction of less expensive entry-level models.
The next phase will be a full week trial, and we cannot wait. With a new look and drivetrain, Volkswagen ID.4 can offset the impact of the Beetle or Golf for VW in today’s fast-growing automotive world.
